Symposium link is back!

My apologies to those who have visited this blog in the past few days in search of info for the North Country Technology Symposium.  A programming bug prevented the Symposium's website link from appearing on the blog.  You'll now note the blog's updated layout with the North Country Technology Symposium's avatar and link in a permanent location at the top of the right hand column.  Your patience and persistance is appreciated!

1. Discussion on use of school sites for Community Access Services—

Laura with the director from Cornell Cooperative Extension. They wanted to know what the status was of the use of the schools to make the broadband access across St. Lawrence County and be able to have everyday access to community residences. Laura had further discussion with the director in regards to the various programs and one purpose of the committee is how to fill in the gap.

Steve Fenton handed out a copy of the sites of the distance learning centers. Steve reviewed the capabilities of the different sites the committee members. Steve indicated that there are 10 districts with the distance learning which allows courses that the traditional school is unable to allow to include on-line courses where applicable.

The committee further discussed in detail the access availability of BOCES facilities in St. Lawrence County for community.

2. SPIRIT Awards Update—Laura handed out award applications with an assignment for the committee members to recruit organizations or individuals to submit an application.

3. North County Technology Symposium Update—13 weeks until event!!!
Laura updated the committee in regards to certain components of the symposium. There are two more committee meetings before the date. Laura indicated that she is receiving good feedback.

New Business

Meeting on February 24 at 6 p.m. at BOL chambers.

Sheriff interest to come to our March meeting.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
January 28, 2010
2 – 4 P.M.

SPIRIT Awards—The St. Lawrence County Chamber’s newsletter will be out in February with the Spirit award’s information; the announcement will be tentatively posted for the first of the month. Laura indicated that Kevin had an additional idea for the organizations to sponsor individual awards.

Symposium-The subcommittee met on Tuesday which spent time working on planning issues and lining up partners. Topic of discussion were the contents and what kind of speakers. Five categories were covered: business, healthcare, Gov’t and Community Services, Business and Industry, and agriculture, and a new category called general category. The presentations are to be approximately 45 minutes. The tentative date is May 19th at Clarkson University. Plan on a day long event. Laura indicated that they are working on a keynote speaker and generating lists. Leigh mentioned that she had a list from Economic Development with their contacts. It was also indicated by the committee to use the list from previous symposium and obtain a list from DANC.

Next Project Deployment Opportunities: Pat McKeown briefed the committee with an up to date with the chamber projects for the expansion of broadband throughout the county. The chamber is targeted three areas for wireless connection. The first area was the Brasher Stockholm area. The others are Madrid Waddington, Morristown-Hammond area. Ridgeview has contracted with those areas. Part of the fulfillment is lack of corporation from the town and placement areas. The chamber has had talks with DANC and SLIC in regard to suggestions for the push of broadband across the county.

Phil indicated that they were successful in the first round securing grant funds to extend their network through parts of the county and is tentatively looking at the whole of St. Lawrence County. The thought is to put in an application for the second round to be more comprehension to go throughout St. Lawrence County.
