INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
March 18, 2010
2 – 4 P.M.

Sheriff Kevin Wells-Kevin Ryan of Motorola discussion on the state of EMS communications in SLC and emerging needs to the horizon—Kevin Ryan reviewed with a power point presentation the aspects of the public safety and the mobile phone abilities for the public safety procedures. Broadband networks will overlay & interoperate with narrowband networks & WI FI. Wireless Technology solutions vary from one county to the next. FCC released order mandating timetable for conversion to 12.5 khz technology by January 2011. Kevin Wells indicated this is why Motorola was asked to come in and to do the presentation. Motorola is looking at ways for Public Safety to have ability for a low cost device. There are options to build, own, and operate public safety wireless broadband networks and are designed for control, coverage, and interoperability.

Kevin Wells indicated that he wanted to committee to be aware of the situation and that they are in the processing of plans for the solutions.

The committee further discussed in detail the present public safety communications capabilities and the up-and-coming requirements from the FCC.

Newton Falls Broadband Project—Update—Article in Newspaper—Phil Wagstaff-Projects was awarded to SLIC Solution to provide broadband to the households.

SPIRIT—Submission date was Monday past week—received 11 applications—3 from one organization—uploaded submission to Google doc share drive. Laura requested r a subcommittee to take it from here. Awards need to be set up so they are ready for the symposium. Adirondack initiative indicated that they will sponsor an award.

North Country Technology Symposium—nearly a full agenda—a few more slots to fill. Touching base with each of the vendors. Talked with keynote speaker which is all set. Blair Patacairk OCRI of Ottawa. Need more exhibitors from private business sectors. Flyer will go in the chamber newsletter as an insert.

Google project—Google fiber project—5 page applications—Tri-Lake area applying for it also—would be able to gather information that would be on hand anyways—need to make a case of why our community would be a good test area. The committee further discussed how to gather information for the data.

IT Director—Pat and Laura have been asked to take a look at leadership for the IT Department. Looking at what other organizations and counties are doing. Then will make a recommendation to the board.
